![]() 1 January 2001 marks the REAL beginning of a new millennium according to the traditional Western (Christian) calendar. Most people seem to have made a mistake about the birth of the new millennium, deciding that it started last January and having partied already for twelve months. One notable commentator for the correct New Millennium date was SF author, Arthur C. Clarke, with his definitive film title, "2001: A Space Odyssey". Readers will remember the world-wide celebrations that marked the start of last year, when it was widely supposed that the New Millennium was starting then. Gee, if governments around the world can get so excited about an arbitrary date on a calendar, imagine how the world could change for the better if they tackled REAL social issues with equal unity and determination. The millennium ahead should hopefully be a good one for gays, lesbians, bisexuals, transgendereds and all others who have an interest in human(oid) rights. As for us, we enter a New Millennium as a club with a small but (hopefully) solid foundation. Our first elected committee is consolidating its roles and responsibilities. Fine tuning is underway. Our first fanzine is due to launch next month (January 2001) and we continue to network with increasing numbers of supporters in the SF and wider communities. May the future be bright and hopeful for us all. Better still, let's see what we can do - both individually and collectively - to build an inclusive planet and galaxy. The Convener. |
